KUCHING (July 12): The Sarawak Transport Ministry is currently exploring the feasibility of reinstating direct flights between Kuching and Shenzhen, China, said Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.

The Deputy Transport Minister emphasised the necessity of assessing passenger demand before finalising such arrangements.

“We previously had direct flights from Kuching to Shenzhen and are now looking into reviving that flight path again.

“We are looking into the load factor of airlines we are negotiating with,” he told reporters when met after officiating the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) Project of Dream Realised Roadshow 2024 at Siburan Community Hall here today.

Regarding the revival of direct flights between Miri and Manila, Philippines, Jerip said discussions are ongoing and will be brought up to his ministry.

“We will look into that arrangement again.

“Flight schedules vary mainly because of the load factor. Any airline that wants to fly from one place to another must consider this factor,” he added.

Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin recently highlighted that reviving direct flights between Miri and Manila is a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering Sarawak’s economic growth and tourism.

Lee emphasised the past convenience of these direct flights and expressed hope for their reinstatement to enhance connectivity.
