KUCHING: Malaysia has been advancing in the adoption of green mobility initiatives to decrease air pollution and carbon emissions, while enhancing energy efficiency.

According to Head of Product Certification at SIRIM QAS Muhammad Kamal Sabran, this reinforces the country’s stance to become the powerhouse for EV in Southeast Asia, especially as electric vehicles gain more traction and popularity within the community.

The Malaysian automotive industry, contributing 4 per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is the third largest in ASEAN.

“However, the move towards a greener and more sustainable mode of transportation raises concerns about the performance, dependability, and safety of these advanced cars,” said Muhammad Kamal in a statement.

The proliferation of Electric Vehicle Charging Systems (EVCS) has sparked debates about their safety and legitimacy.

Malaysia aims to establish 10,000 public charging stations by 2025, as per the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (2021 – 2030).

With the growing momentum of electric mobility, the reliability of EVCS is becoming increasingly crucial. Establishing trust is essential, not just for EV manufacturers but across the industry.

“At SIRIM QAS International, we have the expertise and facilities needed to ensure all charging points are safe, reliable, and functional. With our certification scheme, the EV industry in Malaysia will be able to advance and develop in the near future,” he added.

The readiness of Malaysia’s EVCS for the evolving EV market hinges on various factors, including the strategic expansion of charging infrastructures in urban areas, highways, and public spaces.

“By prioritising safety, reliability and functionality, Malaysia is leading the way towards an environmentally sustainable nation, encouraging electric mobility with confidence and integrity,” he said.
