KUCHING, Feb 13: A 47-year-old woman in Saratok was hauled to court after pleading guilty to abusing a 10-year-old girl, causing physical injuries.
In a Facebook post by the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (Feb 12), the incident occurred at Lot 877, Jalan Feeder, No. 1010, S/L 7, Taman Indah, Saratok, at around 6pm on Feb 5.
According to the charge sheet, the accused is the adoptive mother and legal guardian of the victim.
The case was heard at the Sri Aman Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Puan Intan Nurul Farena Zainal Abidin.
The accused faced charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, with additional penalties under Sections 31(2), 31(3), and 31(3A).
During the hearing, she pleaded guilty and paid a RM12,000 fine, which would have resulted in 15 months’ imprisonment if left unpaid.
In addition, the court ordered 36 hours of community service to be completed within six months and imposed a two-year good conduct bond. Bail was set at RM5,000 without deposit.
