BINTULU (July 23): The Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has called for training to focus on equipping workers for the state’s new green economy.

SCCI Bintulu Region vice president Tan Sri Datuk Paul Koon Poh Keong said education is a key factor in driving the new economy.

He said there is a need for highly educated personnel with technological skills to support the adoption of green energy and sustainable business practices.

“Sarawak has been a pioneer in adopting new technology and creating a culture of innovation,” he said during a business dialogue with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.

“We are fully committed to advancing the state and raising the living standards of all Sarawakians.”

He said the dialogue focused on the development of renewable energy, a cornerstone of Sarawak’s economic and environmental sustainability.

Koon said the Premier and his team emphasised the importance of green hydropower, with significant contributions from dams such as Bakun and Murum, and the ongoing construction of Baleh Dam.

“These projects are pivotal in reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Koon also stressed the urgency of addressing climate change, urging businesses to adopt innovative approaches to reduce their carbon footprint.

“Climate change remains one of our top priorities. As responsible employers, we need to take action to help reverse current climatic trends,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak is exploring clean hydrogen energy as an alternative to attract more business and investment to the state.

He called on all members to raise awareness of renewable energy within their organisations and to implement initiatives that contribute to a greener working and living environment in Bintulu.

Among those present were State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and SCCI president Dato Sri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg.
