KUCHING, Sept 10: In a significant move to enhance international cooperation, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has established a ‘friendship city’ relationship with Yibin City, located in China’s Sichuan Province.

According to a press release, this milestone was achieved under the facilitation of Sarawak Minister for Transport (MOTS), Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

“Lee visited the Yibin Municipal People’s Government office to witness the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding for establishing a friendly cooperation relationship between MPP chairman Tan Kai and Mayor of Yibin Municipal People’s Government, Liao Wenbin,” read the release.

In his speech, Lee recalled his visit to Yibin last year, during which he proposed the idea of a friendship city relationship to the Mayor of Yibin and the local foreign affairs office.

Upon his return to Sarawak, he engaged with MPP, leading to the successful realisation of the proposal.

The minister highlighted that Sarawak’s government has been actively advancing its digital and hydrogen economies, including the promotion of hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART).

He noted that Yibin City plays a key role in this development as the production hub for ART, providing a strong foundation for cooperation between the two cities.

Lee further expressed his hopes for future collaborations between MPP and Yibin, focusing on culture, education, economy, and commerce, aiming for mutually beneficial outcomes.

During the event, Tan Kai extended an invitation to Liao Wenbin to lead a delegation from Yibin to the Malaysia (Kuching)-China Cooperation Forum, which will coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations Gala Dinner between Malaysia and China in December this year.

The event, to be held in Kuching, will mark five decades of diplomatic ties between the two nations. — DayakDaily
