Sarawak dominates Para Sukma to become overall champion

KUCHING: The Sarawak contingent has been crowned champion of the 21st Para SUKMA 2024.

Sarawak ended the national biennial event in first place with a remarkable total of 209 medals – 82 gold, 53 silver and 74 bronze.

This victory allows them to reclaim the prestigious title previously held by Sabah, which came in second with 62 gold, 42 silver and 32 bronze.

Key contributors to Sarawak’s success were the athletics and swimming teams, with athletics earning 33 gold, 24 silver and 37 bronze, while swimming securing 17 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Additionally, the powerlifting team performed exceptional with 13 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze, while the bowling team achieved 7 gold, 3 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

Badminton excelled with 3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze, and the lawn bowl team won 3 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze, while boccia earned 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.

The table tennis team added 3 gold and 2 silver, while chess contributed 1 silver and 5 bronze, archery however, was unable to secure any medals.

This victory marks Sarawak’s best achievement since 1994, following a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarawak Para SUKMA chef de mission (CDM) Datuk Mohamad Razi Sitam, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overall win, praising the athletes for their dedication and spirit.
