KUCHING (Aug 26): Sarawak esports team’s achievements of one silver and one bronze at the just-concluded 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) is still something to be proud of, said Sukma Sarawak assistant chef-de-mission Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor.
She explained this was because the Sarawak esports team still managed to win medals in the seven contested events despite facing professional esports players fielded by the other state contingents.
“I am very proud with the achievements of all the (esports) athletes that managed to challenge and compete with the professional players from different states.
“That’s the sweetest and valuable experiences that they have earned. There are many of them, not eligible to participate in next Sukma due to age limitation. I hope this experience can light up and motivate them in whatever career (field) they have chosen,” she shared in her Facebook page.
She hoped there will be newer talents roped in to the Sukma esports team and to be groomed as future medal winners.
“I hope in next Sukma we can see more new, fresh and young talents to participate. Sukma is one of the best platform for the youths to show their hidden talent and give their best in sports,” she said, adding that the aim in Sukma 2026 is to win gold in esports.
The Sukma 2024 saw Sarawak winning first ever silver medal in the eSports competition through Muhammad Hamdany Abdul Hamid, 21, and Jeff Qi Rui Tan, 14 in the Men’s Team Race.
Muhammad Hamdany also won a bronze for Sarawak in the Men’s Singles Race category.
Federal Territories (FT) topped the esports medal charts with two gold and one bronze medals.
At second place was Perak with one gold, three silver and one bronze, followed by Melaka at third place with one gold and one bronze.
Brunei, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan won one gold medal each.
All the events took place at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus from Aug 20 to 24.
