Sarawak eyes major role in educational tourism as Singaporean interest grows

KUCHING, Oct 23: Sarawak has potential to become a major hub for educational tourism, offering unique and diverse learning experiences.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah highlighted growing interest from Singaporean educational institutions to send students to Sarawak for exchange programmes and industry training.

“This reflects the quality and values we offer.

“Sarawak and Singapore have a long history of cooperation, and we aim to leverage this opportunity to further expand our economic and educational networks,” he said in his speech at the Sarawak Warriors Awards and Appreciation Night 2024 held at Hotel Park Royal on Beach Road, Singapore on Tuesday (Oct 22).

Abdul Karim emphasised that Sarawak is committed to strengthening its ties with Singapore through various initiatives led by the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS).

“Our efforts are not limited to tourism promotion but also extend to education and trade to attract more investors and students to Sarawak,” he added.

Abdul Karim also noted that economic cooperation between Sarawak and Singapore is bolstered by initiatives such as intention on direct electricity supply, developing of data centers, and exporting Sarawak’s agricultural products to the country.

“These initiatives will boost Sarawak’s economic growth and benefit local communities.

“By expanding our presence in Singapore, we aim to position Sarawak as a destination for education, innovation, and cultural exchange—not just tourism,” he added.

The event also featured the presentation of the Sarawak Warriors Awards 2024, recognising the outstanding contributions of travel agents and partners in promoting Sarawak as a top tourist destination over the past year.

Deputy Minister of Creative Industries and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee, permanent secretary to the Ministry Datu Sherrina Hussaini, Sarawak Tourism Board chairman Dato Dennis Ngau, Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor, STATOS chief executive officer (CEO) Chew Chang Guan, Singapore Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board director Norliza Md Zain were present. — DayakDaily
