Sarawak, Hong Kong strengthened the semiconductor cooperation

KUCHING, Sept 16: Sarawak explores opportunities to strengthen strategic cooperation with Hong Kong in the areas of investment, semiconductor, deep technology (deep technology) and other strategic technologies.

The matter follows a meeting of Sarawak's premier, His Highness Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg with SMD Semiconductor and Gobi Partners in Kuching on Tuesday.

Johari said the cooperation has the potential to be a foundation for stronger and long-term ties between Sarawak and Hong Kong especially in regional technology sector.

"We see the potential for Sarawak and Hong Kong to build stronger and longer-term cooperation in semiconductor, deep technology as well as other strategic technologies, besides creating opportunities for both parties to participate in regional technological economic growth", he said in a statement shared by SMD Semiconductor.

According to the statement, among the identified opportunities for investment cooperation are obtaining institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds and strategic partners.

The partnership also covers the acquisition and commercialization of intellectual property rights and strategic technologies.

Gobi Partners Malaysia Managing Partner Jamaludin Bujang said Sarawak could leverage the vast network of the investment firm in Asian markets to gain access to the latest technologies being developed in the region.

Meanwhile, SMD Semiconductor Chairman Dato Sri Wan Lizozman Wan Umar described the meeting as an attempt to bring together two ecosystems that have complementary powers.

According to him, Hong Kong has strengths in terms of finance, capital and innovation, while Sarawak is developing capabilities in semiconductor, digital infrastructure and technology.

The Chief Executive Officer of SMD Semiconductor, Shariman Jamil said that the company will focus on identifying areas where its capabilities and strategic partners complement each other to create commercial and strategic value opportunities.
