KUCHING, Oct 2: Sarawak needs to move from simply using technology to developing its own technologies and solutions in the construction sector.

Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the move is important for strengthening an innovation-driven economy, especially as the construction sector is increasingly influenced by digital technologies, integrated data and artificial intelligence (AI).

"The use of digital technology can help improve coordination, project management and decision-making efficiency throughout the project lifecycle, as well as reduce inefficiencies and risks.

"However, our aspirations must go beyond simply using technology developed elsewhere. Sarawak needs to develop its own expertise, solutions and technological capabilities", he said.

The text of his speech was read by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Caroline Cleophas Joseph, at Digital Construction Showcase (DCS) '26 at Sarawak Science Centre here today.

Sagah said Sarawak engineers, researchers, professionals and technology companies should be given space to develop solutions that not only meet local needs but also have potential for regional and international use.

He said that developing technology itself requires investment in technology, human capital, research, professional competence and industrial cooperation.

"Talent development needs to move along with digital transformation in order to ensure Sarawak has a line of professionals and technical talent capable of meaningfully participating in the new industry and thereafter leading it", he said.

In this regard, he encouraged industrial companies and organisations to invest in labour capacity development, including strengthening digital competencies as well as working with universities and research institutions to solve real challenges of industry.

DCS '26 brings together professionals, technologists, technicians, project stakeholders and decision makers to explore the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM), AI, digital construction technologies and integrated project information in project implementation.
