MIRI (Aug 26): Sarawak police scored the biggest drug haul in the state so far this year with the seizure of 105.2kg of syabu or methamphetamine worth over RM3.36 million on Saturday.
State police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said narcotics personnel from the Sarawak police contingent headquarters (IPK) also arrested four drug trafficking suspects.
“On Aug 24 between 1.15pm and 1.40pm, a team of narcotics police from IPK Sarawak launched two special operations at two different locations in Bandar Baru Permyjaya.
“During this operation, the raiding team nabbed three local men aged between 32 and 52 and a 26-year-old foreign woman,” he told a press conference here today.
He said the drugs with an estimated value of RM3,360,640 could have supplied 525,100 addicts.
All four suspects also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse.
During the operation, Mancha said the raiding team also confiscated a Ford Focus car valued at RM39,000.
On the modus operandi used by this syndicate, Mancha said the drugs were shipped from the peninsula by sea, with Miri being used as the transit point before distribution to other areas throughout Sarawak.
“The suspects used residential houses for storage before the drugs were handed over to buyers.
“The suspects would receive salaries between RM3,500 and RM12,000 per month,” he said.
Mancha said the suspects were remanded for seven days from Aug 25 until Sept 1 to facilitate the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1957.
He stressed that the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) is determined to fight drugs, which are the country’s number one enemy.
“We hope that the public will continue to channel information related to drug trafficking activities to the NCID hotline on 012-2087222,” he added.
