KUCHING, Sept. 16: The Kuching Intercultural Moon Festival (KIMF) is not only a cultural celebration, but also an important platform to showcase the harmony of Sarawak's multi-racial society.
Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that after more than two decades organized, the KIMF is now part of Kuching City's story, as well as playing a role in promoting interaction, understanding and appreciation among multi-racial communities.
According to him, the concept of interculture is not just about showing off each race's culture, but more importantly in providing space for societies from diverse backgrounds to meet, interact and build mutual relationships.
"Tonight we see Chinese, Malay, Dayak, Indian and other communities working together, while a group of young entrepreneurs bring creative ideas and new energy to this historic area.
"This is the spirit of Sarawak's cultural diversity that is unique to this state", he said as he inaugurated the 23rd International Kuching Culture Month Festival 2026 here, tonight.
The text of his speech was read by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Grandfather Snowdan Lawan.
Karim explained, the diversity that exists in Sarawak is not a dividing factor of society, but rather a force for bringing people together.
Additionally, cultural programmes such as KIMF are important in strengthening the tourism sector and creative economy, since tourists now not only want to visit attractions but also seek real experiences through food, culture, traditions and local life.
"The old town of Kuching has a variety of attractions including heritage buildings, traditional businesses, local food, cultural exhibitions and creative activities that help keep the heritage alive and relevant", he said.
He also welcomed the participation of more young businessmen and entrepreneurs in this year's festival, stressing that tradition and creativity should not be seen as opposite.
"The younger generation should be given the opportunity to reinterpret culture, create something new and carry on that legacy in their own way", he explained.
He said the Government of Sarawak will continue to support initiatives that strengthen cultural diversity, advance creative industries and provide meaningful experiences for people and visitors.
