BANGKOK, 14 September: Sarawak's efforts to strengthen regional energy cooperation through its role in ASEAN Power Grid received positive reception from international participants, including representatives of African and Thai countries.
Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Tinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, said the matter was highlighted when attending a ministerial-level roundtable session with energy leaders and chief executive of oil and gas companies at GASTECH 2026 in Bangkok.
He said the discussions also focused on efforts to develop more sustainable energy systems in the face of climate change, including a transition to a low-carbon economy.
"I have spoken about Sarawak's role in the ASEAN Power Grid and both on how we develop energy through changing conditions caused by climate change.
"We must develop on the basis of a decarbonisation programme and continue efforts to share energy together with ASEAN countries", he said as he met after Fireside Chat GASTECH 2026 Session here on Monday.
He said the development has the potential to open up more space for Sarawak to strengthen its energy cooperation network with regional and international countries.
Meanwhile, Brother Johari said his participation in GASTECH 2026 also provided an opportunity to exchange views with the organizers on the economic direction of Sarawak.
He said, interaction with energy industry players and ASEAN partners is essential to enable Sarawak to gain new input and adapt its development strategy to the changing global energy landscape.
"I am confident that our meeting here a little bit can give us new input and also adjust our direction together with our ASEAN partners", he said.
Sarawak's participation in GASTECH 2026 thus demonstrates the state's commitment to play a greater role in the energy security agenda, decarbonisation and regional economic development. - TVS
