SIBU (March 17): The spirit of celebrating each other’s festivals reflects the harmony and unity among the multi-racial and multi-religious Sarawakians, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
“In Sarawak, we are proud that people of different races and religions live together harmoniously as one big family. Regardless of our backgrounds, we respect each other and care for one another.
“One of the beautiful things about Sarawak is that we celebrate each other’s festivals. Whether it is Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Gawai Dayak or Christmas, we share the joy together by visiting each other’s homes and exchanging greetings like brothers and sisters,” he said at a breaking of fast gathering at the Paradom area here last Sunday.
The event was organised by the Paradom village security and development committee (JKKK).
The Progressive Democratic Action Party (PDP) senior vice president also expressed his happiness at being able to join the community during the holy month of Ramadan.
Touching on the significance of Ramadan, Wong said the fasting month represented discipline, patience and spiritual reflection.
“The month of Ramadan is not just about fasting. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, which requires great discipline, patience and spiritual strength.
“At the same time, Ramadan is also a time to reflect, to show compassion, and to extend love and care to others, especially the less fortunate among us,” he said.
Among those present were Kapitan Hii Chin Yu and Kapitan Ling Nai Wu.
