SIBU (July 8): Sarawak is targeting a gold medal each for the men and women’s volleyball teams in the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).
This is according to state assemblyman Joseph Chieng who revealed that he is “responsible” for both teams.
He described the preparations for Sukma as “very good”, adding that the teams have gone to Taiwan and Thailand as part of their training.
“We are aiming for two golds because, in the previous Sukma, we won a gold medal for the men’s category and bronze for the women’s. I would like to urge all Sibu folk to come and support our Sarawak teams (during Sukma in August),” Chieng told reporters after the closing ceremony of Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational Championships at Sibu Volleyball Indoor Stadium, Rejang Park here today.
Also present were Sarawak Volleyball Association deputy president Dr Gregory Hii and Sibu Volleyball Association chairman Dato Moh Wung Ming.
Chieng also pointed out that the Sarawak players gained exposure and experience during the tournament which featured teams from Australia and Thailand.
The week-long invitational tournament, which attracted 11 teams, saw the Bangkok team and Sarawak Sukma team emerged champions for men and women respectively. The Sarawak Sukma men’s team finished second.
