KUCHING (Sept 16): Sarawak is set to build a bio-refinery in Bintulu, announced Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to him, the project will proceed as soon as the algae cultivation farm, which produces sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), is expanded to 10,000 acres.
“Current research shows that 1,000 acres of algae can produce 10,000 barrels of crude algae oil daily, which has potential for use in sustainable aviation fuel production.
“Currently, SEDC Energy and Petronas are conducting studies in Bintulu.
“The project will be expanded to 10,000 acres, with an expected daily output of 100,000 barrels of crude algae oil by 2030,” he said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the state-level Malaysia Day 2024 celebration in Sri Aman today.
Abang Johari noted that the world is increasingly focusing on sustainable or renewable fuel sources, and Sarawak has significant opportunities in this field.
“The tropical climate in Sarawak provides a conducive environment for producing algae oil,” he said.
He also highlighted that Sarawak has successfully increased its oil and gas revenue through Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros).
“Petros has now grown into the third-largest oil company in the country, with significant annual returns.
“Many Sarawakians who previously worked in other oil and gas companies have joined Petros, contributing their expertise to advance the state’s oil and gas industry and national development,” he added.
He stated that this demonstrates Sarawak’s readiness to face the significant challenges of the next 10 to 20 years, leading up to 2050.
“Sarawak’s preparations are meticulously outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“I am confident that, as detailed in PCDS 2030, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s focus on progressive economic development, social inclusivity, and sustainable environmental conservation will become a reality if the people of Sarawak continue to work together in all endeavours,” he expressed.
He also expressed confidence in the future of Sri Aman, noting that it looks promising due to development spearheaded by the Sri Aman Development Agency (Sada) and an allocation of RM1.5 billion over five years.
“I am also confident that the construction of the Second Trunk Road passing through Sebuyau and Lingga, along with the second bridge across Batang Lupar, will have a significant impact on the overall development of Sri Aman Division,” he said.
