KUCHING (Aug 20): In an exhilarating final at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI second day swimming competition, Sarawakian Hii Puong Wei set a new meet record in the 200m backstroke, clocking an impressive 2:06.59, earning him a gold medal.
His performance surpassed the previous record of 2:07.02.
A surprised Puong Wei shared that he was not expecting to break the record, saying: “During the preliminary round, I broke my own personal best with a time of 2:07.70. I told myself I would give my best in the final, but this was beyond what I anticipated.”
Puong Wei plans to use his incentive reward to support his family.
The silver medal went to David Lee Boon Wei from the Federal Territories, who finished with a time of 2:11.32.
Aslan Adnan from Selangor claimed the bronze with a time of 2:11.44, rounding out a competitive race.
