KUCHING: The local authorities have been urged to look into the conditions at the BDC Recycling Centre.
Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Kuching treasurer Wong King Yii said as the Chinese New Year approaches, citizens engaging in the tradition of spring cleaning are facing challenges at the recycling centre.
“Scavengers near the facility are causing concerns, with reports indicating groups gathering around parked cars. In some instances, these individuals boldly open car doors to collect recyclable materials, causing increased apprehension,” he said.
Wong added that the scavenging activity has led to a noticeable decline in people using the recycling station, negatively impacting local businesses. Safety concerns, coupled with the lack of alternative recycling options nearby, may prompt citizens to treat recyclable waste as regular refuse.
“This contradicts the government’s push for waste recycling. Additionally, there are worries about potential theft incidents targeting items bought from nearby supermarkets.
“The ADUN representing this constituency emphasises that the management of the BDC Recycling Centre falls under the Kuching BDC Garden Recycling Merchants Association.
“Given the recurring issues under the association’s administration, local authorities must assess the appropriateness of its management.
“Should we wait for unfortunate events before addressing and resolving this matter,” he added.
He strongly urges local authorities to address this matter promptly, and advised the public to exercise caution when delivering recyclable waste to the centre.
