MIRI: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has emphasised the significant role scout events play in enhancing students’ survival skills.

He was speaking during the closing ceremony of the merit ‘Keris Gangsa’ and ‘Keris Perak’ (Bronze and Silver Dagger badge) Miri Division Scout camping programme on Sunday.

The three-day event at SK Tudan Jaya, which saw the participation of 220 students, was officiated by Lee, who highlighted the importance of holistic education.

“In schools, there are many organisations, and scouts are one of them. We encourage participation because we want holistic education,” he said.

He urged parents to support their children’s involvement in co-curricular activities like scouting, noting that it balances academic studies with practical life skills.

“This kind of camping is very beneficial.

“You learn a lot through activities, enhancing life skills, learning discipline, helping each other, and fostering positive thoughts, rather than just relying on textbooks,” Lee added.

He also announced that an allocation of RM5,000 has been provided to support the scout activities, expressing his hope that more youth would join uniformed organisations like scouts.

“We want more of our youth to join the uniformed union,” he added.

The camp test aims to provide young scouts with essential survival skills and values that will serve them well in life.

Also present were Miri Scouts Council chairperson, Caroline Siburat and the Commissioner of Miri District Scouts, Mary Karl.
