Second victim found, one still missing

LUNDU: The body of the second missing student in the boat capsize tragedy at Sungai Kayan, Kampung Selampit here, was found today (Aug 21).

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department said the body was that of 17-year-old Helena Fasha Petrus.

Her body was spotted afloat downstream by the public around 5.30pm, about 1km from the search and rescue (SAR) control post.

Rescuers recovered the body and handed it over to the police for further actions.

Now, authorities are focusing their search for the last missing student identified as 14-year-old Alsma Jithil.

The tragedy happened around 6.10am when the riverboat was carrying 20 passengers, comprising 16 students and four adults including the boat operator, and a motorcycle.

It was reported that the wooden boat capsized when it reached the middle of the river.
