KUCHING: A security committee led by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has been established to tighten security at venues, including the athletes’ village, throughout the upcoming 21st Malaysian Games (SUKMA) and the Para SUKMA Sarawak 2024.

State Deputy Secretary-General (Operations) and 21st SUKMA Sarawak 2024 Secretariat chief executive officer Datuk Hii Chang Kee said that the committee will also mobilise PDRM personnel across Sarawak’s regions hosting the Games to further bolster security in those areas.

He said this includes movements of vehicles and transportation of athletes to the venues.

“This committee has considered all security matters, including cooperation with the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) Sarawak to manage public control and security officers at each venue, as well as looking after the equipment for the upcoming SUKMA.

“In addition, the movement of individual vehicles from accommodations to venues will be escorted by police, including athletes and VIPs,” he said.

He said this during the Juh Randau programme organised by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) at the Baitul Makmur Building here yesterday (June 28).

Hii assured that security measures at SUKMA and Para SUKMA venues are meticulously handled by the police.

Regarding the safety of SUKMA and Para SUKMA athletes, Hii believes Sarawak remains safe but suggests security will be heightened.

“The police will escort athletes, ensure strict compliance for venue and athletes’ village entry, and issue accreditation cards with varying levels of access or security control.

“We will impose different access control levels for volunteers, technical crews, and different athletes,” he said.

He also mentioned that security will be intensified during the attendance of honorary guests at the opening, closing, and SUKMA banquet events.

Also present at the interview programme were UKAS director Samuel Simon and other senior UKAS officials.
