KUCHING, July 7: The 1.2km Sejingkat Bridge project has reached 94 per cent completion and is on track to be completed earlier than scheduled, marking a major milestone for Sarawak’s transport connectivity.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the project is currently one per cent ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed by early October this year.

“The original completion date was Oct 22, so we are slightly ahead of schedule,” he told reporters during a site visit to the Sejingkat Bridge project today.

He said the remaining works mainly involve road construction, particularly the approaches on the Sejingkat and Tanjung Bako sides.

“The Tanjung Bako side is almost completed, while work on the Sejingkat side is still ongoing,” he said.

Aidel described the bridge as a key component of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road, which will connect Sejingkat, Kuching, to the wider Second Trunk Road network.

He added the bridge was built according to R5 road standards, featuring a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

Aidel said the bridge would serve as a key link for travellers from coastal and interior Sarawak heading to Kuching, with an estimated capacity of 15,000 vehicles per day upon completion.

The project would also support future developments in Tanjung Embang, including the proposed new Kuching airport and deep-sea port.

He added that the Sarawak government is planning further road connections from the area, including links towards Batu Belak, Lubak, Tanjung Embang and Tanjung Selang.

Meanwhile, he said the proposed Batu Belak Bridge project has been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) through the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), with an allocation of nearly RM300 million.

“The infrastructure development here will support future growth, including the new airport and deep-sea port developments in Tanjung Embang, Asajaya and Sadong Jaya,” he said. — DayakDaily
