TATAU (Aug 30): The concept of ‘Merdeka’ should serve as a reminder of each citizen’s importance as a Malaysian, said Selangau MP Edwin Banta.
He said post-independence Malaysians must remain free from external influences that go against national interests, and not be swayed by subversive elements from irresponsible parties.
“We should maintain our national spirit and loyalty to the country in all our actions. All Malaysians, regardless of ethnicity or religion, need resilience to face the challenges brought by globalisation, socially, economically and politically,” he said.
He said this during the launch of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2024 convoy at Tatau Sports Hall on Wednesday.
Adding on, Edwin said the freedom and prosperity enjoyed today by the people stem from efforts by previous generations during the struggle for independence.
“KMJG aims to reignite patriotic fervour across society, fostering love for our homeland and promoting unity for the well-being of all, especially in Sarawak.
“As Malaysians, we must understand, embrace and practice unity amidst our diversity, the very strength of our nation. Unity becomes tangible when all segments of society, regardless of ethnicity or religion, proudly raise the Jalur Gemilang,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tatau Information officer Donny Minggu said the Information Department (JaPen) has become synonymous with organising Merdeka convoys during National Month, inspiring patriotic sentiments among the people.
He called on Tatau residents to display their patriotic spirit by flying the Jalur Gemilang at home, on private vehicles and in their neighbourhoods.
“This display of unity aligns with progress and commemorates Sarawak Day, National Day and Malaysia Day celebrated each year,” he said.
Among those present were Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis, Tatau-Sebauh Education officer Fred Entau, and Pemanca Gerosen Jubin.
