BAU (Sept 7): Enhancing collaboration between the community and the police is essential for effective crime prevention, said Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh.
For an effective partnership, Miro outlined three key strategies, namely to: establish trust, foster cooperation, and prioritise education.
“Having trust and belief in the police, the military and other enforcement bodies are the foundation for any successful crime prevention effort,” he said.
Miro said this when met by reporters after attending the Sarawak Contingent Police Town hall session held at Siniawan community hall here today.
He added that public confidence in law enforcement plays a pivotal role in reducing crime as close collaboration between the police and the public ‘is the cornerstone of any crime prevention initiative’.
“Without the partnership, tackling crime becomes an uphill battle.
“Crime prevention relies on the open dialogue of sharing information and active cooperation between law enforcement and local communities,” he said.
Having identified education as a critical element in crime prevention, Miro stressed that educational efforts must start in schools, family settings, and religious institutions, so as to nurture a more disciplined and responsible generation.
“Education is vital in creating an informed and conscientious society where individuals understand their roles and behave in a manner that upholds community values,” he said.
On the town hall session, Miro engaged in a discussion with Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Wong Ing Fung and Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department chief ACP Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah, which was moderated by Batu Lintang Teacher Education Institute student affairs chief Dr Emyzul Ismail.
Among the issues discussed were illegal online gambling, drug abuse, and theft.
Also present was Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.
