Serikin ICQS project 11 pct complete, six days ahead of schedule

BAU, Sept 21: Construction of the Serikin Integrated Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) is six days ahead of schedule at 11 per cent completion, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud.

Targeted for completion by the end of next year, the federal project is among border security developments that must be fast-tracked under the oversight of the National Security Council (MKN).

Speaking during a working visit to the Serikin ICQS construction site here today, he stressed that border security infrastructure must be treated with greater urgency than routine public works.

“Projects related to national security cannot be treated like ordinary government projects.

“These fall squarely into the ‘urgent and important’ category,” he said.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had raised concerns over delays involving border projects, particularly in Sabah, while Sarawak’s projects were progressing well.

The projects have also been discussed at the MA63 Technical Committee and MA63 Implementation Action Council as part of efforts to strengthen border infrastructure and safeguard national sovereignty in Sabah and Sarawak.

Despite the early progress at Serikin, Mustapha said logistics and supporting infrastructure, including roads, electricity, water and telecommunications, remained key challenges that could affect the overall project timeline.

“If the building is completed but basic utilities are unavailable, the project will still face delays,” he said.

The RM43 million Serikin ICQS project is targeted for completion in 2027, with the facility expected to strengthen border security and facilitate cross-border movement between Sarawak and Indonesia.

Earlier, Mustapha also inspected the proposed Telok Melano Border Control Post, which is awaiting the appointment of a contractor following completion of the final tender process. — DayakDaily
