Seven shop lots at Serian market destroyed in afternoon blaze

SERIAN (Sept 13): A fire destroyed seven two-storey shop lots along Jalan Chung Hua at the Serian Market earlier today.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received an emergency call at 1.24pm before dispatching firefighters from Serian, Siburan, Batu Lintang, and Tabuan Jaya stations to the scene.

“The operations commander confirmed that seven units of two-storey shop lots, each measuring 10×24 square feet, were affected by the fire,” said the spokesperson.

Firefighters used two water streams with four jets — one at the rear and three at the front — to combat the blaze.

A skylift was deployed to assist in extinguishing the fire from above.

Additional firefighting efforts from the rooftop were also carried out, and operations to control the fire were still ongoing with no casualties or injuries reported at the time of writing.

The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still being ascertained.
