SIBU (Aug 8): Sexual harassment needs to be taken seriously as it undermines the integrity and dignity of individuals, disrupts workplace cultures, and erodes trust in education institutions, said Kevin Lau.

The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillor said this in his speech when representing Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang at the launching of anti-sexual harassment campaign at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here yesterday.

“Sexual harassment is not just a personal issue but a societal problem, thus this campaign represents our collective commitment to confronting this issue head-on as we work together to create a safer, inclusive environment for everyone.

“As we launch this campaign, let us remember that real change starts with each one of us by our willingness to listen, learn and act, while supporting those who speak out, and creating a society that gives courage and sanctuary to those affected by sexual harassment,” he said.

“Each of you is the catalyst to build a culture where sexual harassment is not tolerated and where everyone can thrive in a safe and respectful environment.”

The 230 programme participants comprised school counsellors, as well as students and staff members from UTS, Methodist Pilley Institute and Laila Taib College.

The campaign was a joint initiative by UTS’ Psychology and Counselling Unit, UTS Student Council, Sarawak Family Planning Association (SFPA) Sibu branch, and Sibu District Education Office.

Also present were SFPA Sibu chairperson Imelda Amelia Billie, Sibu District Education Office representative Jackery Hillary Chukan, and organising chairperson Hamidah Rapaee.
