SFC brings crocodile safety awareness to Muara Lebaan

SIBU: About 100 residents of Kampung Muara Lebaan have taken part in a crocodile safety awareness session organised by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Sibu following concerns raised by villagers living near the river.

Held at the village hall on Saturday (Sept 19), the session was conducted at the request of the villagers, who sought guidance on staying safe while fishing, washing and carrying out other activities near the water.

“Among the topics covered were the habitat and behaviour of crocodiles, safety measures to take near water bodies, and the proper actions to take should there be an encounter or conflict with a crocodile,” it said in a Facebook post.

The session also formed part of SFC’s “1,000 Visits to Save Wildlife” campaign across Meradong district, aimed at building trust between officers and local communities.

The initiative encourages villagers to see coexistence with crocodiles and other wildlife as something safe and manageable, rather than a constant threat.

SFC thanked Kampung Muara Lebaan residents for their warm reception, noting that such community support keeps conservation work going for the long haul.
