SIBU (Oct 19): Uma Ukit Apau Koyan in Sungai Asap, Belaga yesterday earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the longhouse with the longest traditional rattan-decorated wall measuring 185.4 metres.

The certificate of recognition was presented by MBOR official Edwin Yeoh to Maren Uma Ngarit Lejap, witnessed by Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.

Speaking after the record-setting feat, Chukpai said the achievement symbolised not just the Orang Ulu’s rich cultural heritage, but also the community’s hard work in maintaining traditions passed down from generation to generation.

“The rattan, which is the main material in the decoration of the walls of this longhouse, symbolises the beauty and durability of our local art, and is something that all Malaysians ought to be proud of,” he said.

Chukpai also expressed his appreciation to all those involved in the successful attempt to enter the MBOR.

“The success is the result of the cooperation and unity within the community in working hard to ensure that every decoration on the wall is keeping with traditional values.

“It also displays the unparalleled talent, creativity and skill of the local folks,” he added.

With this achievement, Chukpai said the longhouse could potentially draw more visitors to view the rattan wall and experience the unique culture of the people.
