KUCHING (Aug 7): Sarawak will continue to collaborate with the federal government to exercise its constitutional rights and powers, said Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) said the collaboration aims to ensure the state’s constitutional rights and powers are exercised effectively while contributing to the nation’s overall economic progress.
“We are doing so to promote economic well-being and progress within the federation and also help the country,” she told reporters when commenting on Sarawak’s continental shelf rights.
According to Sharifah Hasidah, the recognition grants Sarawak full rights and powers over activities within this maritime zone, which will also benefit the nation.
“This means Sarawak can manage and conduct activities from its shore to the continental shelf because land matters fall under the state’s legislative and executive powers, which cannot be interfered with,” she explained.
She also said Sarawak’s sea border, as defined in its Land Code, extends up to the continental shelf, which is 200 nautical miles from shore.
“Because of that, anything within this boundary is Sarawak’s territorial right and Sarawak has the right to regulate and utilise whatever natural resources are found within this zone,” she said following the opening ceremony of a Pickleball League at the MUSCS Pickle Ball Arena in Demak Jaya.
A total of 11 teams are competing for cash prizes totalling RM20,000.
The winner will receive RM7,000, while RM5,000 and RM4,000 await the teams that place second and third.
Winners will also receive a trophy, medals, and pickleball sports equipment.
The fourth and fifth placed teams will receive RM2,500 and RM1,500 respectively.
Also present at the opening ceremony was Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
