SIBU (Sept 13): The Immigration Department’s Sibu Enforcement Unit has detained 20 illegal immigrants at several locations here in an operation on Sept 11.

The department in a statement today said the detainees included 17 men and three women.

“They were found to have committed various offences such as not having a valid travel document, overstaying and not having a valid passport to stay in Malaysia,” it said.

It added that all the cases will be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963.

Acting on information received, the department’s enforcement unit conducted inspections at several locations around Sibu starting at 4.30pm when all the suspected individuals were at work.

“A total of 69 individuals were checked during the operation. Of the number, 20 of them were detained in eight separate locations such as factories, construction sites and commercial premises,” it said.

The department also urges the public with relevant information about the illegal immigrants to channel the information directly to the nearest Immigration Department office or through an online complaint channel.
