SIBU (July 31): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is entering the final phase of preparations for the highly anticipated Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2024, running from Aug 8 to 17 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 and Phase 2.
SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, who is BCF organising chairman, said a grand parade will kick off the festivities on Aug 9, leading up to the official opening ceremony.
“The parade will begin from 6.30pm which is followed by the lighting of the arch. This all leads to the symbolic opening ceremony of the festival,” he said during a full council meeting here yesterday.
As this year marks the festival’s 20th anniversary, Izkandar called on all SMC staff members and councillors to actively participate in the event.
Echoing this sentiment, SMC chairman Clarence Ting underscored the importance of BCF for the council and urged the public to show their full support for the event.
He highlighted the upcoming Participatory Design Conference (PDC) hosted by University of Technology Sarawak as a key reason for councillors to actively participate in BCF, noting the expected influx of international visitors to Sibu during this period.
Meanwhile, on a seperate matter, Ting addressed the council’s ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal signage in Sibu, revealing that approximately 895 unauthorised signs have been identified in the area.
