SIBU (Aug 24): The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is encouraging more business premises to participate in the ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign in efforts to conserve the environment.

In making this call, Councillor Kevin Lau said there are currently eight business premises participating in the campaign, agreeing to not use plastic bags for their business on Saturdays.

“We hope more businesses and traders within the SRDC area, including Selangau, join us in the effort to preserve and conserve the environment.

“It is our hope that the campaign will go a long way in creating a heightened sense of awareness among business owners and customers in reducing the use of plastic bags,” he said when officiating at the launch of the campaign at Kim Hock Supermarket in Sibujaya yesterday.

Lau added that SRDC had also worked with schools in the council area to introduce the campaign.

“The council provided the schools with recycling bins, in which the schools also raised awareness to the importance of the three R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle,” he said, noting that plastic bags take decades to decompose.

Lau hopes that the community will work together with the council in reducing plastic bags and also to reduce the pollution that is caused by plastic waste.
