KUCHING, Jan 22: A distress call about a single mother working as a cleaner, living in difficult conditions with a leaking roof infested with termites, has prompted community leaders, including Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, to take immediate action.
According to a press release, Yap, Penghulu Lai Boon Khee, and Kapitan Chai Yong Liang recently conducted a final inspection and officially handed over the repaired roof and ceiling of the house to the woman.
The repairs were made possible through funding and financial assistance totalling RM15,000 under the Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Programme (PPRMS) of N12 Kota Sentosa at Lorong 37, Stampin Resettlement Scheme.
Additionally, it was noted that the repairs were conducted and successfully finished through a ‘gotong-royong’ by volunteers from the village development and security committee (JKKK) of Kampung Stampin Baru Cina.
Before the repairs, not only was the roof leaking but it was also in danger of collapsing.
Yap who was alerted about the situation three weeks ago took the initiative to assist in repairing the badly leaking termite-infested roof with new metal roof trusses and spandex, as well as replacing a portion of the ceiling with new plaster board roofing.
During the official handover ceremony, Yap thanked all volunteers who had participated and contributed their time and effort to assisting the less fortunate in the ‘gotong-royong’, which demonstrated unity, resilience, compassion, and care by helping the needy.
PPRMS provides assistance up to a maximum of RM15,000 from the Sarawak government to help those who live below the poverty line or come from low income groups to obtain basic facilities and a comfortable residence so that they get new hope in enjoying a better quality of life.
Those who require house repair assistance under PPRMS can contact community leaders in N12 Kota Sentosa for more information or apply directly at Yap’s service centre at E-2-25, 2nd Floor, Gala Street Mall, Gala City, Jalan Tun Jugah, Kempas Heights, 93350 Kuching. — DayakDaily
