MIRI (Sept 23): SK Riam Batu Dua has harvested a second crop from its highly successful hydroponic project for pupils.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the project promotes life skills while generating income from the sales of fresh vegetables.
“I was told that the school started the project in July this year after a successful fish rearing project. It inspired them to start the hydroponic crop planting. So, I requested the Agriculture Department to assist them with the latest hydroponic technology,” he said during a visit today.
“Seeing how the project provides students with hands-on experience, it would encourage them to do it at home, with the knowledge they learn at school.”
Headmistress Rohani Ismail said the aquaculture and hydroponic projects seek to provide pupils with practical experience for the Design and Technology subject.
“In the past, we only taught them theoretical knowledge. With practical experience, they are able to understand better,” she told reporters.
She added the successful project will be a model of learning for other schools.
The school sells some of the harvested vegetables at an affordable price.
A similar fish rearing and hydroponic planting project is also being implemented at SMK St Joseph here.
