KUCHING (Oct 17): The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Measat Global Berhad to enhance Sarawak’s space industry, last Tuesday.
The signing, witnessed by Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, will be followed by an exchange ceremony at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024 on Oct 16, which will be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Under the MoU, Measat will serve as a consultant to the Sarawak Space Industry and Satellite Committee (Siscom), offering its satellite expertise to shape Sarawak’s space policies, guidelines and industry development.
“This collaboration includes joint projects on satellite operations, training, and policy development, positioning Sarawak to manage its own satellite systems and improve connectivity in rural areas,” said a press release yesterday.
Julaihi in the same statement said the partnership is key to achieving Sarawak’s 2030 goals of satellite self-sufficiency and enhanced policymaking capabilities.
Meanwhile, SMA general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said the collaboration will nurture local talent and position Sarawak as a leader in satellite technology.
Measat’s chief operating officer Yau Chyong Lim, on the other hand, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Sarawak’s space ambitions and contributing to the state’s development through satellite technologies as well.
