SIBU (Aug 19): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will roll out the ‘Green Waves for Earth’ event this Sunday at the covered car park at Town Square 1 here.
In a press release today, organising chairman Cr Toh Yong Kiang said this was in response to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s call to strengthen Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
He informed SMC is collaborating with government agencies, Neighbourhood Watch Committees KRTs, village security and development committees and other non-government organisations to organise events such as plogging, exhibitions, Green Market, Waste to Wealth activity and Fun Games at the venue.
“SMC strives to continuously encourage Sibu folks to practise the 3Rs in their daily routine through our many campaigns and initiatives, especially ‘Say No to Styrofoam Food Containers’, ‘Say No to Plastic Straws’ and ‘Waste to Wealth Campaign’ and so on.
“Also in line with this year’s Earth Day theme, that is ‘Plastic vs Planet’, mystery gifts and souvenirs will be given to the first 100 participants who bring over 2kg of plastic waste for recycling purposes and at the Fun Games booth,” he said.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting is expected to grace the opening ceremony.
