BINTULU (July 18): SMK Bandar Bintulu’s STEM Club recently hosted an inspiring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exhibition and career talk, in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science.

Project leader Dr Sivasangar Seenivasagam from UPMKB’s Department of Science and Technology said the event, which gathered 120 Form 4 and 5 students, aimed to deepen their interest and knowledge in STEM.

“This university linkage programme not only provides exposure to the programmes offered at UPMKB, but also opens opportunities for them to understand the challenges and opportunities available for students, especially in the field of chemistry,” he said.

Through the hands-on experiences, he said students had the opportunity to explore chemical experiments, including the creation of Nylon 66, esterification processes and the combustion of alkene fuels.

Sivasangar added the event featured a dynamic question-and-answer session with chemistry lecturers, allowing students to delve into fundamental concepts.

“Additionally, a career talk illuminated various STEM pathways post-graduation, helping students chart their professional journeys,” he said.

SMK Bandar Bintulu principal Rubiah Taip, meanwhile, expressed hope for such programmes to be continued.

“We hope programmes like this can open students’ minds to the opportunities out there and give them the motivation to achieve their ambitions,” she said.
