MIRI, September 13: Golden Citizens are encouraged to continue engaging in social and social activities to ensure that they remain healthy, active and unisolated after retirement.

Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that physical health care alone is not enough as emotional health and social connections are also important in ensuring the quality of life for those affected.

He believes that activities such as singing, dancing, traveling, association and volunteer work can help golden citizens maintain relationships with friends and lead more meaningful lives.

"If we sit at home every day and just take care of our health, it's also unhealthy. The important thing is, we need to be active and sociable.

"We can't live too alone because one's interests can also affect health", he said.

He said this while addressing the Senior Citizen Singing Fellowship and Lunch Gathering hosted by Kaying Community Association Miri, here today.

He added that such singing and meeting activities not only fill up the leisure time, but also provide opportunities for golden citizens to meet old friends and maintain social connections.

"Singing can make us happy and give us the opportunity to go out and meet friends.

"Although it seems like a leisure activity, I think it means a lot because we can keep in touch and not just sit at home after retirement", she added.

Meanwhile, the provision of public facilities such as recreational parks is also important in promoting healthy lifestyles among communities including Golden citizens.

He said a total of 51 small and large-scale parks have been developed in the Miri area over the past few years to provide space for residents to exercise, relax and interact.

"My goal is for people in each neighborhood to have a garden near their home where they can run, exercise and do activities together.

"This is important because we are facing an ageing society and need a suitable place for them to exercise and gather", he said.

According to him, the demographic changes that are witnessing an ageing society require a shared attention from governments, families, communities and community organizations.

He said that face-to-face communication is also becoming increasingly important in the age of technology as society now communicates more and more via smartphones. - TVS
