MIRI (July 6): The Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) Foundation has recently contributed construction materials worth more than RM100,000 to the Penan community of Long Peran in Murum.

The materials, which include spandex roof, plywood and wooden poles, are essential in assisting the community to build a new longhouse, a central aspect of their infrastructure and daily lives.

“This contribution marks a significant effort to support the community development and aims to enhance the quality of life of the Long Peran residents,” said SOP in a statement.

In addition to these materials, SOP also provided machinery for land clearing and preparation, ensuring a smooth progress of the construction project.

“We are deeply committed to supporting the communities in Sarawak.

“Our contribution to the Long Peran community reflects our dedication to improving living conditions and promoting sustainable development.

“We believe this new longhouse will significantly impact the Penan community, providing them a safer and more comfortable living environment,” said SOP estate manager of Seping 1 Estate during the handover ceremony.

The new longhouse when completed will serve as a vital communal space, accommodating multiple families and functioning as a hub for cultural and social activities.

SOP stated it believes the improved infrastructure is expected to have a lasting positive effect on the community, facilitating better living standards and promoting a stronger sense of unity and resilience among its members.

“We pledge to continue to actively contribute to the local community by organising various economic support and social contribution programmes which encompass a wide range of areas, including education, healthcare and disaster relief, among others,” it said.
