MIRI (Oct 12): SOP Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sarawak Oil Palms (SOP) Group, recently organised a vision care project in Uma Sambop, Belaga in conjunction with World Sight Day.
The initiative saw 138 residents of Uma Sambop and nearby longhouses, including Batu Pilau and Long Nanyan, receive essential eye care services, said the foundation in a statement.
Held in collaboration with Sungai Anap Health Clinic and Spec Shop Sdn Bhd, those in need were provided prescription eyeglasses at no cost, with SOP Foundation covering all expenses.
“Sight is a critical aspect of overall health, and through this vision care project, we aim to ensure that residents in remote areas like Uma Sambop, Batu Pilau and Long Nanyan have access to essential eye care services,” said the foundation.
It also extended its appreciation to its partners for making the project a success.
Meanwhile, Uma Sambop longhouse chieftain Matu Lian commended SOP Foundation for covering the expenses related to the eye-screening programme and sponsoring eyeglasses for the residents in need.
Initiated in 2013, SOP Foundation’s vision care project aims to raise awareness about healthy living and reduce preventable blindness, particularly among children and the elderly in remote areas with limited access to medical facilities.
Through the foundation, SOP said it is committed to supporting local community development through various programmes.
“These include initiatives in education, healthcare, disaster relief, and more, reflecting SOP’s ongoing dedication to making a positive impact on the communities it serves,” it said.
