KUCHING: A delegation from Sarawak led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan recently visited one of the biggest gold mines to benchmark best practices of gold mining.

A press statement on Sunday (June 16) said they visited Micassa Gold Mine at Kirkland in Toronto, Canada.

The gold mine which boasts the highest grade in the world is operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited.

During the visit the delegation was briefed on Sustainability and Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) management and how the company adhered to industry’s Sustainability Standards.

The delegates were also briefed on a mining protocol namely “Towards Sustainable Mining”, which is a globally recognised sustainability programme that supports mining companies in managing key environmental and social responsibilities.

Additionally, the delegates toured the underground mining and gold milling operations, observing the various advanced techniques and technologies, including automation and digitalisation to enhance efficiency, safety and sustainability.

Gold mining in Sarawak has a long history dating back to the 1800s but ceased operation in 1997, due to low market prices.

Based on the estimates of a geo mapping survey, there are commercially viable gold deposits estimated at 3.3 million ounces to be mined.

A Canadian company listed in the Australian Stock Exchange has been exploring the potential of gold in Bau area since 2010.

Awang Tengah welcomed investors and the company to Sarawak to explore opportunities particularly in mining.

Accompanying the Deputy Premier were Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh, and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali and other senior government officials.
