KUCHING (July 20): The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) reached a significant milestone by planting 2,000 seedlings of five tree species at the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve in Sibu recently.
According to a press statement, this effort was part of the broader ecoGreen Planet initiative, which was launched in June 2022 during the Rainforest World Music Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival.
The initiative highlights Sarawak’s dedication to environmental awareness and sustainability, aligning with Malaysia’s national reforestation goals through a holistic approach to responsible tourism.
It also fulfills a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation to plant 10,000 trees by 2027, and supports STB’s mission of advocating sustainability, responsible tourism and carbon offsetting efforts for the festivals.
STB chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor said their goal is not just to offset carbon emissions, but create a lasting impact on the environment thus ensuring a greener future for generations to come.
“This tree-planting activity is part of the five-year greening programme through ecoGreen Planet.
“During RWMF 2024, STB introduced the Green Ruai, a space powered entirely by solar energy — showcasing green technologies and sustainable farming practices.
“The ecoGreen Planet initiative reflects STB’s commitment to establishing RWMF as a sustainable festival through innovative, responsible tourism initiatives,” she said.
Sharzede said by integrating sustainable practices into its festivals, STB is setting a benchmark for responsible tourism in the region.
Supported by sponsorships and ticket sales proceeds, ecoGreen Planet plays a pivotal role in Sarawak’s reforestation efforts, promoting biodiversity conservation and ecological balance.
