KUCHING: Online gambling is a serious issue that comes with wide-reaching social and economic consequences, and a member of parliament (MP) has called for immediate action by state authorities.

Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng claims Sarawak has a big problem when it comes to online gaming, arguing that it has affected the people badly.

“Everyone knows about this, including politicians, but no one dares to speak up because gangsters are involved. Keeping silent in the long run will wreak the state,” he said in a Facebook post.

Sng, who is the Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president, said it has been his long-term opinion that there are too many lottery outlets in Malaysia.

“Hopefully the government will consider consolidating these companies into just one or at most two.

“These companies have made billions over the years from the sweat and blood of poor Malaysians. The government needs to address this problem,” he said.

On a related note, he applauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s move to eradicate illegal gambling and prostitution.

“I hope the Minister of Home Affairs will follow through on this matter,” added Sng.
