MIRI: The preparation of venues for the upcoming SUKMA 2024 in Miri is nearing completion, according to Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) and chef de mission (CDM) for the 21st Malaysia Games Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.

Gerald, who inspected the facilities in Miri earlier today,  expressed satisfaction with the overall readiness of the venues, particularly for sports such as karate, softball, sailing, rugby, sword, and pencak silat.

“The venue for rugby is 100 per cent ready. Pencak silat equipment will be installed this afternoon. Softball is 95 per cent complete, with just a few minor repairs needed. IKBN and Eastwood venues are also at 95 per cent readiness,” he said.

Gerald assured that accommodation and food arrangements for athletes and officials are fully prepared.

In a move to motivate the athletes, Gerald hinted at incentives for Sarawak athletes who win medals, particularly gold.

However, he mentioned that the official announcement on the incentives will be made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Our athletes are ready. I’ve seen their preparation, and I am confident that they can win,” Gerald said.

He also noted that there are initiatives from associations and individuals to provide rewards for gold medallists.

SUKMA 2024 will be held across nine divisions: Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.

This year’s games will feature 37 sports, comprising 488 events — 236 for men, 217 for women, and 35 mixed events.

A total of 12,619 athletes and officials will participate in the games.
