SIBU (Aug 20): The 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) Carnival at Sibu Indoor Stadium, which has been running since last Saturday (Aug 17), has recorded sales of over RM50,000.
According to Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak Datuk Michael Tiang, the amount represented the proceeds from 42 entrepreneurs participating in the carnival.
“This shows that the response to the Sukma Sibu Carnival has been very encouraging, and I hope that all of you would continue to support our local entrepreneurs,” said the Pelawan assemblyman at the official opening of the carnival today.
Adding on, Tiang believed that the carnival had opened up the opportunity for the local entrepreneurs to market their products which, in turn, would help improve their household income, as well as the local economy.
He said he was happy to see many people giving support to the local entrepreneurs throughout the carnival, apart from cheering the Sukma athletes.
“I expect they (entrepreneurs) will achieve sales of over RM100,000 throughout the carnival, which have four more days to go.
“This is not the first time – we had a carnival during the Sarawak Games as well, and I think next time, we can have bigger platform for them,” he added.
The carnival is run by the Sibu Division Entrepreneur Development Council, together with the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (Mintred), Sibu Resident’s Office, Welfare Department, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, and Sibu Agriculture Office.
It involves 43 local entrepreneurs selling various handicrafts and also local food products.
