KUCHING (Aug 14): Perak women’s cyclist Nyo Ci Hui won the gold in the women’s cycling individual time trial at the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) today, even though her bicycle meter was not functioning.

The national cyclist said that she felt as if she was cycling ‘blind’ as her bicycle meter failed to display her speed throughout the race.

“I realised at the start of the race that my meter was not functioning and the satellite couldn’t connect, maybe because of the location. So throughout the race, I couldn’t monitor my speed at all and it really was a tough challenge.

“I could only monitor my cadence and heart rate so it really was as if I was cycling blind,” she told reporters after the race.

Ci Hui did not only have to deal with an non-functioning meter but also lost her water bottle and watch during the race.

“Besides that, I also nearly got hit by a car but managed to avoid in time at the end of the race,” she added.

Ci Hui won the gold with a time of 41 minutes 10.793 seconds (s), while Federal Territories’ Yeong Zhen Yi took the silver with a time of 42:43.860s and Nur Fitrah Shaari of Kedah won the bronze with 43:19.462s.
