SIBU (Aug 16): Sarawak is banking on Wong Ling Ching to deliver a gold medal for badminton women’s singles event at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI, said Nikram Shazran.
The Sarawak Sukma Badminton officer Nikram Shazran said Wong has a high chance of winning the title for the state as she is currently the national’s women No. 2 player who recently played at the 2024 Uber Cup in China.
“Her vast international experience should be able to guide her through,” he said when met at Sibu Indoor Stadium.
The badminton team matches start tomorrow.
Besides Wong, Nikram said the Sarawak team also consists of four other Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) players, and all of them have potential for podium finishes.
They are Jeremy Juan, Israf Hafizin Ibrahim, Alwyn Chua and Genevie Lim.
“Nothing should be taken for granted and we hope this time round, badminton can produce some surprises,” Nikram added.
Sarawak clinched its first medal in the badminton mixed doubles through Owen Ting and Wong at the 2022 Sukma in Kuala Lumpur, after an almost 30-year drought.
