Sukma XXI: Fencing event suspended after Sarawak protest fencer’s suit

MIRI (Aug 22): The finals of the Sukma XXI Men Foil Team event in fencing here was suspended after Sarawak lodged a protest against a Federal Territories fencer for wearing a suit with a different name.

Sarawak was already leading 10-5 after the first two duels and it’s third fencer was ready to continue when the match was suspended by the referee.

The Sarawak team manager Mohd Azmi Zakaria said the protest was first lodged with the jury which allowed the match to proceed.

A subsequent complain with the technical team later stopped the match.

This angered the FT team which protested that the host should not have taken advantage of the situation but let the better player win.

Azmi explained that the protest was lodged in accordance with the Sukma fencing rules.

As of the time of this report, the match has yet to resume pending the decision of the technical committee.
