SIBU (Oct 9): The Dudong and Sibu Jaya branches of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) jointly hosted a seminar on the Sarawak Foundation’s scholarship last weekend.
The programme involved 50 participants, comprising parents and students from the nearby areas.
Speaking at the event, SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong said despite facing defeat in the parliamentary elections, he would continue to serve the people in line with the party’s tradition.
He also announced that this seminar would be brought to the longhouses so all Sarawakian youths could pursue higher education.
“As such, students who have completed the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) education are urged to actively apply for the Sarawak Foundation scholarships in order to further their studies into higher education,” he said.
According to Wong, the foundation also provides scholarships for Master’s Degree and Doctorate programmes, with eligible fields of studies being Mathematics, Sciences and Technology.
The approval rate for the applications, he added, was as high as 95 per cent and they were exclusively available for Sarawakians.
“The loans are interest-free, but must be repaid within one year after completion of studies.
“Furthermore, they are applicable to public universities or designated private universities in the country.
“Recipients of the merit scholarships may enjoy a rebate of 25 per cent, 50 per cent or 75 per cent, and students from low-income families may also apply for entrance allowances,” he said, adding that all Sarawakian students could apply regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.
